Cities invest thousands — sometimes millions — of public dollars into skateparks. That investment deserves to be protected. And far too often in Utah, it isn't.
The single most consequential decision a city makes in the skatepark process isn't the location, the size, or the budget. It's who builds it. A poorly executed skatepark — one handed off to an unqualified general contractor or a local concrete company with no skatepark experience — doesn't just underperform. It fails. It sits empty. It becomes a liability. And it sets back the entire community's skatepark efforts for years.
We can't afford that anymore.
The solution is straightforward: insist on qualified skatepark expertise from design through construction. In most cases, the firm that designs your park also builds it — that's the ideal. When they don't, a reputable design firm will subcontract construction to a trusted team of skatepark building specialists, not hand the plans to a general contractor who has never shaped a transition in their life. Either way, the people finishing your concrete must live and breathe skateparks — because the difference between a world-class park and a wasted slab shows up in every curve, every transition, and every surface. Your community will feel it for decades.
Many cities use a design-bid-build (DBB) process — hiring a designer, then opening the build phase to competitive bids. When executed well, DBB can work, but only if bid qualifications are written tightly enough to exclude unqualified contractors from the outset. Involving the local skating community during the design phase is equally critical — it ensures the park serves a range of skill levels and reflects what riders in your area actually want to skate.
Before selecting a partner, research their portfolio thoroughly. Visit their parks. Talk to the communities that use them. Experience and craftsmanship matter far more than the lowest bid — a well-built skatepark is a generational asset, and cutting corners at the outset almost always costs more in the long run.
